Luminescent Bacteria
The oceans have an average depth of about 4000 m. Sunlight does penetrate hardly deeper than 200 m, even in very clear water. Most of the ocean water is therefore dark, but not pitch-dark. There are light-generating microorganisms, free-living or symbionts of fish. Most famous are dinoflagellates of the genus Noctiluca, which are responsible for sparkle of the sea. Furthermore, luminescent bacteria can be isolated from fresh herring quite easily.
