Preparation of a termites intestinal tract.
The bubble shaped structure is the fermentation chamber, where
numerous protozoans and bacteria digest the wooden particles.
The fermentation chamber of the termites has a volume of 0.5 to 10 µl. It is full of diverse microorganisms, which consum all oxygen that penetrates into the chamber and degrade the wood to simple compounds (mostly acetic acid). These are utilisable by the termites.
