 
The phototrophic halophilic flagellate  Dunaliellea salina

One of the organisms responsible for the coloration of saltern crystallizer brines is the unicellular green alga Dunaliella salina.  Its cells are pigmented red-orange because of their high content of carotenes.  Dunaliella accumulates large amounts of glycerol to provide osmotic balance with its highly saline medium.
