Bacteria from a lake

Dot blot analysis for the quantification of bacteria in water samples.
At the bottom there is a series of known amounts of DNA from
the pure culture of a lake bacterium. In the upper row different
concentrations of DNA extracts from a water sample were analysed.
The DNA concentration and thus the abundance of this bacterial
species can be estimated from the grey intensities.
The composition of a bacterial community can be analysed without cultivation by means of molecular methods. One of several techniques is the dot blot analysis. Here the grey intensity of a dot indicates the abundance of a certain bacterium in the original sample.
