Yeast under the microscope

Differential interference contrast, which gives a three-dimensional impression that might be artificial.

Differential interference contrast (DIC)
For the differential interference contrast technique, objects are irridiated by two adjacent beams of the same polarity. If at edges the beams are refracted differently, they show interference. At one side of the object they are amplified, at the other they are attenuated. Hereby relief-like pictures with shadows arise.
