Magic Microbial Spheres

Early stage of a bacterial sphere,
containing a single cyanobacterial filament,
diameter about 100 µm
Formation of a sphere
Without any known reason, the bacteria in liquid- or agar cultures start to form a sphere. This has a diameter between 80 µm and 3 mm, and is surrounded by a membrane. Inside, the bacteria are accumulated at high density. It is still unknown to which species the bacteria belong.
