Deep biosphere
The seafloor underneath the oceans contains a huge amount of living microorganisms, the so-called deep biosphere. The activity of the deep biosphere can be derived from the chemical processes and the development of chemical gradients in the sediments. However, little is known about the organisms in these strange environments. The international ocean drilling program (ODP/IODP) supports scientific research with special drill ships.
