How bacteria swim

Bacterial flagella made visible by electron microscopy,
left:Comamonas compransoris, right: Achromobacter carboxydus.
Negative contrasting with uranyl acetate, bar = 1 µm
The type of flagellation is a morphological feature of species. To analyze the number and localization of the flagella an electron microscope is used. On the left there is a bacterium with a single polar flagellum (monpolar), the bacterium on the right carries a polar tuft of flagella (lophotrichous flagellation).
