Complicate processes might occur after starting an experiment by adding an oxygen-containing solution to the frontier of the anoxic bacteria-suspension.
At first, a diffuse bacterial band moves away from the oxygen. Shortly after this, a second, very sharp band appears starting from the edge of the capillary.
This band does not (continue to) recede.
