Bacteria in the top layers of tidal flat sediments. The cells were
stained with a fluorescent dye that lets nucleic acids emit green
light under UV irridiation
The upper sediment layer contains bacteria at extremely high numbers (for comparison: With 10 000 bacteria per square centimeter there would only be a single cell on the picture). These are not pathogens but form the normal sediment microflora that is involved in the degradation of organic matter.
