Bacterial diversity in the uppermost 10 millimeters of
sediments from the island of Schiermonnikoog, analysed
by means of genetic fingerprints. Each band indicates
another type of sulfate-reducing bacteria
The diversity of bacteria is overwhelming. Even within a single centimeter there are different species of a physiological groups of bacteria (here sulfate reducers as an example, Wieringa et al. 2000). Some prefer 0-4 mm, others 4-8 mm etc.
